Prospectively, the New Mexico Judicial Branch is requiring full vaccination status as a condition of employment to being hired into the judiciary.

The New Mexico Supreme Court Law Library is recruiting for a full-time, at-will Reference Attorney (Attorney-Assistant) to work in the Supreme Court Building, located in historic downtown Santa Fe.

SUMMARY:
Provide administrative assistance, customer service, technical support and training to the public and judicial patrons of the Supreme Court Law Library. Respond to correspondence, emails, telephone calls, and in-person information requests from pro se litigants, inmates, attorneys, judges, court staff, government employees, and members of the public. Prepare materials and make presentations for library tours, training, and outreach. Under general direction and review of the Law Librarian, perform legal research and analysis, which may include written work product, upon request of judges and court staff throughout New Mexico, as well as provide legal advice and make recommendations to the Court or Judicial Entity.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:
    Must be a graduate of a law school meeting the standards of accreditation of the American Bar Association; possess and maintain a license to practice law in the State of New Mexico. Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university is desirable.
  • Experience:
    One (1) year of experience in the practice of applicable law or as a law clerk. Experience as a librarian or work in a law library is desirable.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The successful candidate will be a person of high ethical standards, with strong legal research and writing skills, who will bring a service-first orientation to the New Mexico Supreme Court Law Library. The Law Library Reference Attorney will be thorough and responsive to requests for legal research assistance from judges and court staff throughout New Mexico. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to determine when to seek assistance, to accept constructive criticism and guidance, to display teamwork, to learn quickly and retain information, to work in a collaborative, courteous, diligent, diplomatic, timely, and organized manner, and to provide prompt and courteous service to all library patrons who contact the Supreme Court Law Library. Essential characteristics include broad knowledge of United States and New Mexico law, demonstrated skill in legal research and analysis, and effective communication skills in verbal and written formats. The ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion is imperative, as is the ability to provide research assistance and legal information to the public without giving legal advice. The ability to respond to multiple demands under short deadlines in a thorough and professional manner is essential.
